Kaspar Winkler was the founder of his company Kaspar Winkler Ltd., in 1910 with a chemist as his partner, their first product was Sika-1 which was a mortar waterproofing agent. Turnover was low between 1910 and 1917 it was the Swiss Federal Railway that gave them their big break after the First World War. The Swiss rail system was electric and they had to waterproof the tunnels the railway lines passed through. The Swiss decided that Sika-1 was the answer to their needs and used the product in 67 tunnels. An overnight success after seven very hard years, by 1935 Sika had offices in Europe, Asia and South America.
Sika’s fully integrated product offering covers the entire life span of a building, from initial construction up to the point in time when repair, refurbishment or extension become necessary. Since January 2013 Sika has focused its business model on offering products in seven sectors,
- roofing, flooring
- sealing & bonding
- refurbishment and industry
- R&D in all seven sectors
Sika is still the product of choice in the longest tunnel in the world, the 57 kilometre Gotthard Tunnel in Switzerland with new innovative products.

As I have mentioned the Sika-1 product in the introduction it is fitting that it is the first product we address here, it is still available after 100 years.
Sika-1 Waterproofer is an aqueous solution containing complex colloidal silicates. When applied the product blocks capillaries and pores in concrete renders, screeds and mortars. The colloidal silicates swell when in the presence of water and create a barrier against the transmission of water.
Characteristics and Advantages
Mixing diluted Sika-1 Waterproofer liquid with Sika-1 Mortars produces the multi coat components for structural waterproofing and waterproof render systems. Mixed in 4 grades the Sika-1 mortars are prebatched kiln dried and blended into specially graded aggregates and cements. The combination of mortars and diluted waterproof liquid create the peak application performance and durability for the products.
The full list of uses, characteristics and advantage can be seen on the Sika Catalogue, see the links provided above.
