Allgrip Industrial Ireland and UK are delighted to announce we are now stockists of Metsec Cable Containment Products. Metsec Strut(channel) and all its associated bracketry is a similar product to Unistrut channel. In today’s blog, I am going to discuss Metsec products and highlight the key benefits their Strut (Channel) brings to the table. The correct name for strut or channel is in fact Metal Framing System even though I am regularly asked for strut or Unistrut, just like people call their vacuum their Hoover. Unistrut is a brand as is Metsec, they both make top quality Metal Framing Systems.

The Metsec Company

While most people in the industry will recognise the Unistrut brand name, not everybody will be aware of the Metsec Brand so let me just explain briefly about the status of the company. Metsec is owned by Voestapline an Austrian multinational enterprise turning over billions of Euro in the steel industry. The Metsec Cable Containment Division turns over €90 million approx. per year from its West Midlands UK manufacturing facility.

Metsec produce all their Cable Containment products at this manufacturing facility, the largest such Cold Rolling facility in the UK and Ireland. They produce Metal Framing System, Cable Tray, Trunking, Purlins and Lattice Beams on site. All these products are cold rolled from coils of strip metal to finished adaptable products for the Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Industry.

What applications can I use Metal Framing Systems for?

The answer is nearly everything; the flexibility of the product allows it to be fabricated in any number of ways. When assembling Metsec strut, like Unistrut, the assembly can be fabricated for different loadings depending on the application the assembly is intended for;
  • pipe support, roof top walk ways, ceiling support grids, platforms, conduit support, Solar Panel support, storage and shelving racking
as you can see the design applications are endless.

Metsec Quality Standards

The Metsec range is CE Certified and conforms to BS 6946:1988, the BS standard for Metal channel cable support systems. Metsec products have qualified for the British Kite Mark, this differentiates it from Unistrut and all other UK manufacturers, as it is the only independently tested Metal Framing System in the Irish and UK market.

Other standards include

1. Channels;
  • manufactured from steel complying with BSEN10346:2009 pre-galvanised,
  • BS EN 10025-2:2004 mild steel hot dip galvanised after manufacturing to BS EN 1461:2009 and
  • BS EN 10088-2:2005 stainless steel grade 316L.
2. Brackets;
  • manufactured from steel complying with BS EN 10025-2:2004

Building Information Mapping Standard(BIM)

All UK Government Building projects have been to BIM Level 2 Standard from April 2016. Metsec is the first Tier 2 Designer and Manufacturer complying with BIM Level 2 for Design and Construction in the UK and Ireland.

What is BIM?

BIM is the sharing of project information covering all stages of a project life cycle from concept to the building completion and to its eventual re-cycling.

Metsec Engineering Support

Metsec have a full engineering support team at their facility in the West Midlands for all Metsec customers. Metsec are also working on bespoke engineered solutions for their customers to reduce “install time” and to give an improved installation solution.

Cut-to-Length Service

Metsec, like Unistrut offer four strut (Channel) profiles and these are available in plain or slotted, these can be assembled into different configurations for additional load carrying capacity where needed. There is a Cut-to-length service, as this takes place during the manufacturing process the integrity of the pre-galvanised coating is maintained.

Combination Channels

As with Unistrut, Metsec provides channel in multiple configurations e.g. back to back channel, are supplied spot welded as standard. It is also important to point out that these combination channels should be fully supported at each end under the bottom face and the load should never be hung from just the lips of the bottom channel.

Pre-fabrication service

In conjunction with Metsec we can offer a pre-fabrication service this can lead to considerable savings on “Install Time” by having prefabricated modules and bracketry delivered on site. Metsec have provided this service for Intel in Kildare, Ireland. Thereby saving the contractor money due to a reduction of “Install Time” on the contract.
