Picture
JCP Construction Products is the specialist fixings division of the Owlett-Jaton Group. Owlett-Jaton is in turn owned by Hexstone Limited the largest importers of Fasteners and Fixings in the UK. JCP Construction Fixings are designed for…well the construction industry, makes sense. Not only do they have a comprehensive range of products but JCP also have an Anchor Calculation Programme with 3D Graphics. John Murphy(Castlerea) Ltd have a long association with Owlett-Jaton and JCP.
Anchor Calculation Software
The Anchor Calculation Programme is compliant with European Guide EOTA TR 029 for bonded anchors and EOTA ETAG-001 ANNEX C for mechanical anchors. It has 3D graphics and “hole depth optimisation” for chemical anchors. It currently has the facility to calculate up to nine configurations of fixings in different base plate geometry with more combinations planned shortly.
The programme is free to use, all you must do is log onto here and work away. If you have any questions you can ring the lads in the London office @ 0044 2089 431800 they will be very happy to help with your enquiries.

JCP Mortar Estimator
This is another very helpful piece of software, again it is free and all you do is log onto the link above and click on the download button. The Mortar Estimator Tool allows engineers to design connections using a simple design tool to consider loadings, spacing’s and edge distances.
All the relevant information can be loaded into the program. The programme will calculate how many cartridges of chemical anchor you need for the project in question and of course JCP have a full selection of injection resins to select from. All JCP resins are CE Certified.

Through Bolts for Cracked and Uncracked Concrete
OPTION 1
Picture
Along with calculation software and chemical anchors JCP supply Allgrip with Option 7 Through Bolts for uncracked and Option 1 for cracked concrete for use in concrete in over C20/25 concrete strength class.

OPTION 7

These Anchors come in a variety of sizes starting at;
·         M6 x 60mm through to M24 x 260mm in the Option 7 series
·         M8 x 75mm through to M16 x 200mm in the Option 1 series

With full data sheets available to back up their quality claims. They also provide you the end user with the documentation needed for your end of contract audit trail. JCP also offer CE Certified Through Bolts in Stainless Steel in Grade A4-316.

Socket Bolt Anchors
Picture
I wrote about our new service, on site anchor testing, a few blogs back and it is JCP’s Socket Anchor Bolt that I originally requested to provide this testing service for. Their Socket Anchor Bolt is available in Single and Dual Thread, the dual Thread comes in M8+M10 and then the single Thread is available in M8 and M10 separately, all three options have an Internal Thread.
The shank is self-tapping which cuts its own thread in the base material and it is suitable for use in solid concrete, hollow concrete, bricks, dense blocks and most natural stone. These come with a full set of data sheets and have CE Certification.

Drop in Anchors
Picture
Picture

The JCP Range includes the following range of Drop in Anchors:
·         Standard zinc plated
·         Lipped zinc plated
·         ETA Approved with CE Cerfication
·         Stainless Steel with CE Certifcation

The ETA Approved Drop in Anchor is a deformation controlled anchor suitable for use in concrete and requires the use of the right setting punch to ensure correct installation. The anchors are covered by a European Technical Approval single use in non-cracked concrete or multiple use for non-structural application in both cracked and non-cracked concrete
All JCP Products are available in a 4/5 working day delivery if not is stock in our two facilities in Ireland or the UK. If you have any questions leave a comment here or contact the number provided below.

Muro - Auto Feed Screw Driving Systems

9/11/2017

Picture
Muro’s auto feed screw technology continues to lead in the development of Auto Feed Screw Driving equipment, Muro are a Canadian company with a long history in the auto feed tools sector. Allgrip Industrial and John Murphy(Castlerea) Ltd., are happy to be Muro’s chosen partner in Ireland. With a wide range of tools and fasteners to suit all applications Muro has a coil or strip feed system that will complete the task in a time efficient manner. This links back to our ongoing goal on this blog of advising you on how to reduce your “Install Time” thus lowering your costs.
Here is a list of the sectors that can benefit for Muro’s technology
·         Construction
·         Manufacturing
·         Roofing
·         Truck
·         Trailer
·         Modular accommodation

Fasten while standing up, no pre-drilling required
Easy to use, reliable and ergonomically designed to reduce bending and stooping so you work standing up during the drilling process. These tools remove the need for you to reach for each individual screw thereby reducing your “Install Time”. You have the added advantage of not having to pre-drill into steel as the fasteners are designed to drill straight into steel where required. The auto feed mechanism feeds the fasteners in line with the bit. You push down on the handle the tool does the rest of the work, what’s not to like.
So, these tools do the following:
1.       Dramatically increase the speed of installation
2.       Improve the health and safety of your staff by the tools ergonomic design
3.       Increase your profitability

Muro Vislider Coil System Tool
The Vislider is a coil system heavy duty tool. Other models in the range are for Heavy and Medium duty applications. I have recently been given one of these tools to do onsite demonstrations and I must admit I am impressed by how light the tool is even though we were driving 65mm super wing self-drilling screws into 50mm timber and then 5mm steel.
You can see the tool is durable and that the moving parts such as the fasteners are easily reloaded. The bits need replacing every box, approx. 1600 screws, are easy to fit. The replacement varies with different screw sizes, smaller size screws don’t put as much strain on the bit so you don’t replace them as often. On the demonstration, I was drilling in 6 x 65mm super wing screws.
Picture
As you will have seen in the video and the image above, the tool has a drum which holds the coils of screws, the drum always reminds me of the machine guns in Bugsy Malone, these pass through the feed mechanism, this is in line with the handle all you have to do is push down and let the screw eat through the timber or steel or both as seen in the video.
The adjustable depth control allows for countersinking the screws so you have no raised screw heads.

Super Wing Self Drilling Screws
These screws are available in various sizes from 5.0 x 32mm up to 60mm and in 6.0 x 40mm up to x 100mm. The square drive is standard, these match the bits that come with the tool. The screws will drill into wood, steel or aluminium
Picture

Muro also supply a full range of high quality strip system tools but that is for another blog .

Anchor Testing

8/31/2017

Picture
On Site, Anchor Testing is now a service Allgrip Industrial offers its end user customers. This is a service we had been asked for regularly by our construction customers, as we are supplying Anchors such as Socket Bolt and ETA Option Through Bolts from JCP Jaton. Our customers are required to prove the suitability of the Anchors performance in concrete “cracked” or otherwise. In today’s blog, I am going to go through the process of testing and the actions we have taken to be able to provide this new service.

When one of our customer’s procurement manager asked could we provide the testing service my first thoughts were yes, no problem, a typical salesperson’s reaction, of course then I had to think about what I had just committed to do. There is quite a bit that needs to be considered, just rocking up to a site with a testing kit in hand will not cut it. So, after careful consideration the following were the main points to cover:
  • Test Kit Manufacturer
  • Test Kit Training
  • Site Access
  • Product knowledge
  • Substrate knowledge
  • Documentation
  • Insurance
Test Kit Manufacturer and Training
Picture
The decision to run with HydraJaws was easy, the recommendations came from the first three conversations I had with suppliers in the UK. They were all very complimentary towards the company, their people and their Testing Kits. HydraJaws are based in Birmingham and are trading since 1985, when their first prototype came on the market. Their range of testing kits has grown as has their customer base which is now worldwide.

Ian Craig at HydraJaws listened to my needs and recommended what he believes to be the best Testing Kit in their range. Ian has many years in the testing sector and is hugely respected within the trade. The kit he recommended was Model 2000 Deluxe Duty Tester, I felt a bit like Harry Potter must have when getting his Nimbus 2000 Broom Stick.

Ian spent a half day training me. He gave me an exam to pass after that, thankfully this all went smoothly and I passed with flying colours, the first two hurdles out of the way.

Site Access
When considering doing the pull tests onsite I realised I needed to undertake three key pieces of training, if I didn’t have all three of these courses completed, site access was always going to be an issue. The three are:
1.       Safe Pass Course
2.       Manual Handling
3.       Working at Heights

Having never worked in the construction industry I had none of this courses completed so I enrolled with the Chris Mee Group in Little Island in Cork. All three courses took a combined two days, I passed all three and now have the correct documentation to back up my claims if required to produce them by a site safety manager.

Product Knowledge
Picture
Currently Allgrip Industrial’s main supplier of construction grade anchors in JCP in the UK. JCP are a division of the huge Hexstone Group. All the products come with full technical specification, and in several cases European Technical Approval’s (ETAG). As stated above the most common requests for testing are on:
Socket Bolt Anchors
Through Bolt ETA Option 1
Picture
Picture
A self-tapping socket anchor which cuts its own thread in the base material. Suitable for use in solid concrete, hollow concrete, bricks, dense blocks and most natural stone. The socket has both M8 and M10 internal threads.  Also available are individual M8 and M10 sockets allowing for Threaded Rod to be threaded into the sockets and a load suspended from the anchor.

A through bolt with an Option 1 ETA, suitable for use in cracked and uncracked concrete.
Both examples can be accompanied by a request for onsite testing. Allgrip Industrial is now able to provide that service. I have attended training at JCP to better understand their products and again can provide the documentation to back that up.

Substrate Knowledge
As you are aware different substrates require different anchors to suspend load bearing weight from. The experience within Allgrip Industrial and our experienced suppliers mean that we will specify the correct anchor for your specific requirements. Most of the testing I am being asked to do is into concrete, hollow core plank, cracked and uncracked.
Our supplier JCP/Jaton also have an Anchor Calculation Programme which is available online to engineering/design departments as a “Free Tool” to complete their design work. If needed JCP will also train people to use the programme.

Documentation
As well as completing a “Risk and Method Statement” of the tests I have being requested to carry out, we will back up all Anchors with the correct CE Cert’s, DoP’s, Fire Certs and all other necessary documents for the project audit file.

Insurance
Allgrip Industrial and our parent company John Murphy (Castlerea) Ltd have the correct indemnity cover to carry out the testing and to cover all support documentation provided as a direct result of testing.

Heller Drills Bits

8/16/2017

Picture
Heller is a name synonymous with Drill Bits and Drilling holes in all types of materials. Allgrip Industrial supplies their Bits, Hole Saws, Arbors, Chisels, Jigsaw Blades, Recipro Blades, Power Blades and Dust Free Drilling Kits. Below we will explore what makes the Heller product a market leader.

Heller History
In 1583 a gentleman by the name of Jacob Heller was given permission to produce drill tools, it is incredible to me that the name has stayed with the company that long, take overs and buy outs would normally have brought change but not in this case. The Heller name has stayed through many owner changes and re-locations. In 1928 Heller became the first company in the world to manufacture Tungsten Carbide Tipped Drill Bits. Most Heller products continue to be produced at their Head Quarters in Dinklage in Lower Saxony. The company has a Germany parent company called Serafin based in Munich since 2014.
Heller Innovation
The new century has seen Heller driving innovation with the launch of new industry leading products such as Dust Free Drilling, TriJet 3-cutter SDS plus Hammer Drill Bit and more recently their Power Blade Range. I will deal with all three product ranges below in more detail here today. To place your order’s ring the contacts below.

Heller Duster Expert
The Duster Expert Extraction Drill Bits can save you MONEY. This financial saving is achieved because the system cuts down on “Install Time” our favourite cost effective method. Because you are drilling and cleaning (extracting the dust) the drilled hole as you work, you do not have to use air pumps and cleaning brushes to do this time-consuming work.

If you are drilling holes for applications such as chemical anchors, re-bar fitting or standard anchors into substrates then the Duster Expert Extraction Drill Bits are going to save you considerable time and labour costs.

Available in 14mm to 35mm sizes and with the Heller SDS Max badge you know they are a quality drill bit. All you need is a standard M Class professional hoover to draw the dust out of the hole while drilling, the hoover is attached to the drill bit via fitting attached to the drill bit. All you must do is attach the hoover hose to the attached fitting and start drilling.

The health benefit is also a major consideration for you and your employees, no dust, no worries about dust getting into your employee’s lungs. No dust, no need for dust masks in a large percentage of the drilling you would normally wear one. The dust free benefit means you are not creating a “passive smoker syndrome”, the drilling dust cloud spreading to your other workers or worse to other contractor’s workers.

So where is the down side to “Dust Free Drilling”? There is none, reduced direct cost through reduced “Install Time” and reduced indirect costs through loss of work days due to illness or worse law suits due to chronic ill health because of poor health and safety procedures.

Watch the video of the product in action, it is under 3 minutes long, it will well worth your time.
Dust Free Drill Bits Benefits
  • Extraction drills to drill and clean in one step: dust is extracted where it develops, directly within the hole
  • Simple application and secure anchor installation: almost completely removes dust, making subsequent hole cleaning obsolete
  • Cost-effective solution for end users: save time cleaning the hole and/or the surrounding area
  • Equally durable and comparable performance to a standard drill
  • Universal and flexible applicable with SDS-max hammers and regular professional vacuum cleaners

TriJet 3-cutter SDS plus Hammer Drill Bits
Drilling concrete? Worried about Re-Bar? Want to reduce your costs? Well these are the Drill Bits for you. These bits are also covered by Hand Arm Vibration if used with the correct tool. As you will see these bits are built to last. The video makes a better statement than I can with words...
These are a stock item with Allgrip Industrial. To place your order’s, contact the numbers below.

Company

Kaspar Winkler was the founder of his company Kaspar Winkler Ltd., in 1910 with a chemist as his partner, their first product was Sika-1 which was a mortar waterproofing agent. Turnover was low between 1910 and 1917 it was the Swiss Federal Railway that gave them their big break after the First World War. The Swiss rail system was electric and they had to waterproof the tunnels the railway lines passed through. The Swiss decided that Sika-1 was the answer to their needs and used the product in 67 tunnels. An overnight success after seven very hard years, by 1935 Sika had offices in Europe, Asia and South America.
Sika’s fully integrated product offering covers the entire life span of a building, from initial construction up to the point in time when repair, refurbishment or extension become necessary. Since January 2013 Sika has focused its business model on offering products in seven sectors,
  • concrete
  • waterproofing
  • roofing, flooring
  • sealing & bonding
  • refurbishment and industry
  • R&D in all seven sectors

Sika is still the product of choice in the longest tunnel in the world, the 57 kilometre Gotthard Tunnel in Switzerland with new innovative products.

Senco

Senco's motto or strap line is "Tools inspired by hard work and designed to make it easier". This works in neatly with the stated goal of Allgrip Ind., to reduce "install time" for our customers, thereby reducing their costs. Senco make and supply much more than tools, they also make Fasteners and Fasteners systems. John Murphy (Castlerea) Ltd., recently concluded a deal to make us the sole distributor for Senco in Ireland. Another high-quality brand to add to our already large range. Allgrip Industrial benefits from this deal as we can now supply our end user customers in the construction/timber sectors and "In Plant" manufacturing, an area which we had not “mined” for business previously. Senco's fastening tools and systems are used to finish manufactured products on assembly lines across the world.
Senco History

Senco is a US company and the name comes from an abbreviated version of the original company name of Springtramp Eliminator Co. The first invention/product was for the automotive trade in the 1930's but it was after the Second World War that the company took off on the back of the booming US economy. The demand for pneumatic tools in the construction, automotive, bedding, furniture and casket sectors drove the growth of the company. From the 1st July 2013, the Construction Products Regulation (CPR) was passed into law across Europe. That means all construction products, sold after that date must comply with the CPR standard. It is Simpson and Allgrip Ind., policy to sell products that comply with the CPR standard.

DoP, where can it be found?

All Simpson products covered by their Declaration of Performance (DoP) can be found on their website along with a link to the relevant DoP ready for download. This makes everybody’s job easier when putting together the documentation needed for all building projects and subsequent audits.
The labelling on all packaging of Simpson Products are very clearly marked to show their compliance with the CPR.

Advice and Technical Support

Simpson pride themselves in offering you the customer the very best support. They have a technical support team on standby to help with your queries. Most queries can be dealt with swiftly, especially if you have the following key pieces of information on hand before you call.
  1. What product from the range are you using?
  2. Do you know your load requirement?
  3. The width and height of the supported member?
  4. The width and height of the supporting member?
  5. Of what material is the supporting member made of?
Common sense information that will speed up the answers from the support team but we all know common sense isn’t all that common, as the scouts say “be ready”. I am going to highlight some of the products from the range, the selection process is not scientific I am just picking on the basis that the product appeals to me and my customer buy them from me.
Column Caps and Post Bases(CPT)

This product has been redesigned recently, the new CPT concealed post base provides a clean solution, concealed while providing a 25mm stand-off height above concrete, this 25mm stand-off saves the post base end from decay. The CPT is made off pre-galvanised steel, the base is powder coated black for a better appearance and the CPT can be fixed to the concrete base with metal or chemical anchors, supplied by Allgrip Industrial obviously. A popular choice with all Timber Framer house builders.
Picture
Timber Frame Panel Closer(TFPC)

Where you are dealing with closed panels you need a product that allows you to draw the panel together. This helps to minimise air leakage between timber frame panels and reduces the damage to the exterior substrate that using screws only can do. Simpson have design a unique screw guide and this ensures that the fastening is driven quickly and accurately. My framing customers tell me this is a beauty; it solves a real problem for them.
Picture
Hold Down Straps(ETFSS)

ETFSS hold down straps do what they say in the description, they are designed to keep the timber structure from uplifting from the concrete substructure. The strap is CE certified and tested to pass the relevant BS EN standards. Due to the possibility of damp the strap is made of Stainless Steel to avoid corrosion. It is flexible in that it will fit in cavities from 50mm to 100mm.

Metsec Metal Framing System V Unistrut

5/25/2017

Picture

Allgrip Industrial Ireland and UK are delighted to announce we are now stockists of Metsec Cable Containment Products. Metsec Strut(channel) and all its associated bracketry is a similar product to Unistrut channel. In today’s blog, I am going to discuss Metsec products and highlight the key benefits their Strut (Channel) brings to the table. The correct name for strut or channel is in fact Metal Framing System even though I am regularly asked for strut or Unistrut, just like people call their vacuum their Hoover. Unistrut is a brand as is Metsec, they both make top quality Metal Framing Systems.

The Metsec Company

While most people in the industry will recognise the Unistrut brand name, not everybody will be aware of the Metsec Brand so let me just explain briefly about the status of the company. Metsec is owned by Voestapline an Austrian multinational enterprise turning over billions of Euro in the steel industry. The Metsec Cable Containment Division turns over €90 million approx. per year from its West Midlands UK manufacturing facility.

Metsec produce all their Cable Containment products at this manufacturing facility, the largest such Cold Rolling facility in the UK and Ireland. They produce Metal Framing System, Cable Tray, Trunking, Purlins and Lattice Beams on site. All these products are cold rolled from coils of strip metal to finished adaptable products for the Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Industry.
Picture
What applications can I use Metal Framing Systems for?

The answer is nearly everything; the flexibility of the product allows it to be fabricated in any number of ways. When assembling Metsec strut, like Unistrut, the assembly can be fabricated for different loadings depending on the application the assembly is intended for;
  • pipe support, roof top walk ways, ceiling support grids, platforms, conduit support, Solar Panel support, storage and shelving racking
as you can see the design applications are endless.

Watch a Metsec video on YouTube here

Metsec Quality Standards

The Metsec range is CE Certified and conforms to BS 6946:1988, the BS standard for Metal channel cable support systems. Metsec products have qualified for the British Kite Mark, this differentiates it from Unistrut and all other UK manufacturers, as it is the only independently tested Metal Framing System in the Irish and UK market.

Other standards include

1. Channels;
  • manufactured from steel complying with BSEN10346:2009 pre-galvanised,
  • BS EN 10025-2:2004 mild steel hot dip galvanised after manufacturing to BS EN 1461:2009 and
  • BS EN 10088-2:2005 stainless steel grade 316L.
2. Brackets;
  • manufactured from steel complying with BS EN 10025-2:2004
  • mild steel hot dip galvanised after manufacture to BS EN 1461:2009 and
  • BS EN 1008-2:2005 stainless steel grade 316L
3. Fixings;
  • bolts, hexagon nuts, screws and washers manufactured from steel complying with DIN938/8, DIN933/8.8, BS4320 and zinc plated and CR3 passivated or hot dip galvanised after manufacture to BS EN1461-2:2009.
  • Stainless steel to BS EN 10088-2:2005 grade 316L A4.
Load tables are all listed in the Metsec catalogue download here

Building Information Mapping Standard(BIM)

All UK Government Building projects have been to BIM Level 2 Standard from April 2016. Metsec is the first Tier 2 Designer and Manufacturer complying with BIM Level 2 for Design and Construction in the UK and Ireland.

What is BIM?

BIM is the sharing of project information covering all stages of a project life cycle from concept to the building completion and to its eventual re-cycling.

Metsec Engineering Support

Metsec have a full engineering support team at their facility in the West Midlands for all Metsec customers. Metsec are also working on bespoke engineered solutions for their customers to reduce “install time” and to give an improved installation solution.

Cut-to-Length Service

Metsec, like Unistrut offer four strut (Channel) profiles and these are available in plain or slotted, these can be assembled into different configurations for additional load carrying capacity where needed. There is a Cut-to-length service, as this takes place during the manufacturing process the integrity of the pre-galvanised coating is maintained.

Combination Channels

As with Unistrut, Metsec provides channel in multiple configurations e.g. back to back channel, are supplied spot welded as standard. It is also important to point out that these combination channels should be fully supported at each end under the bottom face and the load should never be hung from just the lips of the bottom channel.

Pre-fabrication service

In conjunction with Metsec we can offer a pre-fabrication service this can lead to considerable savings on “Install Time” by having prefabricated modules and bracketry delivered on site. Metsec have provided this service for Intel in Kildare, Ireland. Thereby saving the contractor money due to a reduction of “Install Time” on the contract.
